look for 'Max recent programs' in the Main Menu tab, make sure to check "show all settings"

Thanks for that.
I was confused by the fact that the window does not change size when there are a small number of entries.
The standard in windows is to enlarge the start menu even if there is nothing to display.
I asked the question before using enough programs to see the effect.

I also cannot find a way to pin a program to the start menu.

In the latest beta, you can right click anything and tell it to pin to start menu, in 3.6.8 you have to go through some technical registry tweaks to allow pinning, I would suggest upgrading to beta, or waiting for that feature to be released on the stable channel :P
