Don't ask me to make sense of this, but I think that since I installed Classic Shell, whenever Windows 8 needs to be updated, it becomes unable to connect to my router via Wifi. Once I manually restart Windows and it installs the Windows updates, things work fine again. Does this make any sense?

When exactly does it lose connection? When it tries to download updates, or when you log in after the updates?

I almost never log out of my Windows account -- whenever I walk away from my laptop, I either close it and it goes into sleep mode, or it automatically locks after 10 minutes. In both cases, it asks for my password when I come back, but that's not a real logging in since I never logged out. So in answer to your question, the loss of connection is either when it tries to download updates, or when it tries to install them (both of which it is set to do automatically).

OK, then it is unlikely to have anything to do with Classic Shell.
I have noticed on my tablet running WinRT that often times after waking it up the WiFi service has shut down and I have to restart it. The tablet is not running Classic Shell.
I think some recent Windows update broke the service.
