I have 2 new computers, both with windows 8. Not a fan of Metro so I installed Classic Shell on the laptop and its awesome. I installed Classic Shell on the Desktop then, and the start button shows in the lower left, so that is great. But whats weird is, if I click the start button in the lower left corner it doesn't pop up the menu it instead pops up the Metro 8 tiles that I'm trying to avoid all together?

The charms from Metro and hot corners are disabled but the Custom Shell start button just pops up tiles.....if I manually push the button on the keyboard with the windows icon then the start menu pops up, but if I just use the mouse to click start button then the metro tiles pop up? When I manually push the key on the keyboard then the start menu pops up and I see the option for "Classic Start Menu Settings" and when I go there and choose the "Windows 8 settings" tab it is set to skip the metro screen and disable the active corners. So I'm baffled --- if I use the mouse to click the start button on the laptop it opens the start menu, if I use the mouse to click the start menu on my desktop however....the Metro tiles pop up. Any suggestions????

Other question......

Can somebody suggest how to change the search settings so that when I use the little search box in the start menu it scans for WORD or Excel or Powerpoint files? (I was previously on a Windows 7 computer and I could just type in the name of the document I wanted to open and it would immediately find that document. With Classic Shell I do a search and it doesnt locate those documents in the search window, I have to go to the menu then click the seach button from the menu, then click on the option for "Files or Folders" which then opens another screen, then enter the file name, rather than just entering the file name in the little search box and having it go straight to the document????

Any insights would be appreciated. I am not a techie at all, so my knowlege of this stuff is limited.....I just want my new computers that came preinstalled with windows 8 to have the same start buttons and search function as my old computers. Thanks!

1. Right click the Start button, choose Settings. On the "Controls" tab, there is a setting "Left click opens". Set it to "Classic Start Menu" so that the Metro screen doesn't open.

2. The current version of Classic Start Menu doesn't yet support file search but we're listening to feedback.

Well good news for you. Now the latest public beta version of Classic Shell which is available from the home page has full Windows Search integration, including file search. Try it if you are interested.
