I have for many years run version 2.9.2 and it has worked flawlessly.
That is the main reason I never updated.
Since it is so old, can I still update by installing on top of the old version
or should I uninstall and reinstall.
Would the backup and restore work to preserve old settings .
It is awful to install an update and spend a week getting it to be close
to what it replaced.

I suggest you install Classic Shell 3.6.8 first and then move on to the latest version of the 4.x series. I don't remember if Classic Shell 4.0 migrated settings from 2.9.2. That version is too old. If you install version 3.6.8 first and then 4.x, your settings should be preserved.
