I'm sorry if the answer to this question is located elsewhere, but I searched and couldn't find it.

I was under the impression that with Classic Shell installed, my computer would no longer boot up with the "tile window" as in Windows 8.

After installation, there was no difference. Did I miss a step?

This is a built-in OS setting in 8.1. Right-click on the taskbar, select Properties, switch to the Navigation tab and look for the setting to go to the desktop on startup.
