click on the start button - metro screen opens
go to setting > controls and change check the classic start menu
close settings
click start menu - metro screen opens
go back to settings > control and the checkbox beside windows start screen is checked
what ever i do i cant change that control setting - it keeps defaulting back to the windows start screen
i did a repair install of classic shell
i uninstalled classic shell from control panel, deleted folders left after the uninstall and deleted the registry entries
reinstall classic shell and still the same problem

the classic start menu will open using the windows button on the keyboard

this has likely been covered but i have searched and not been able to turn up this particular issue

Make sure you are reproducing the problem after a restart.
Then download the Classic Shell Utility from here: http://www.classicshell.net/downloads/
Run it and send me the log file.

Maybe you are clicking on the hot corner. Go to Settings ->Windows 8 Settings tab and set disable active corners to All and on Controls tab, set left click opens to Classic Start Menu. Now try clicking the Start button.

Exit the start menu (right-click on the start button, then Exit)
Run regedit and go to HKCU\Software\IvoSoft\ClassicStartMenu\Settings
Delete the value "MouseClick"
Log off and log in.
See if that makes a difference

Also while you are in regedit, look at the permissions of the Settings key. It is possibly something is messed up and the settings fail to save to the registry.

solved - thanks to the contributors

the key word was ivosoft provided here by ivo - the advice was no help as the value "MouseClick" was not in the registry
but now i knew where i could do a clean out
searched and deleted all keys and values containing ivosoft an classicshell
scoured the hard drive for similar
did a reinstall and all is good

what was wrong with the previous install was that the settings screen did not have an ok button - it was running maximised and no option to bring it down to a window
so what ever setting i changed had no effect as the ok button was not able to be clicked

the ok button should have been the subject of my OP

thanks again

So the problem was that you were setting an option and pressing the X button, as the OK button was not visible on the screen.

By default, the window is not maximized so you or some programs must have maximized it.
