To All,

Well the preview is now available!

Who will be the first guinea pig to see what happens when you redo W8/Classic Shell with 8.1?

I have been using CS for months now, applied shortly after I installed W8, and have gladly never looked back.

Looking forward to any and all enlightened and hands on findings.

Could try a VM... ?

EDIT: looks like it's only available as update and even worse you''ll loose all apps and settings. Don't want to spend a full
day on installing all the junk.

I installed Windows 8.1 Preview on my HP Envy m6 notebook today.

After the LONG install and restarting about 200 times it finished.

The first thing I noticed is the Windows start button under the classic shell start button. I restarted a couple of times but it was still there. So I researched online how to disable the official Windows start button. No luck.

At the end of the day I just disabled the Classic Shell start button. Now when I click on the start button it shows the Windows start screen and when I use the Windows key I get Classic Shell. For now this works for me because I usually use the Windows button to get the start menu.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks all!

You can also right click on the start button to shut down. We no longer have to use the charm menu on the right side...TIME SAVER!

No, version 3.6.8 was just released. It is the same as 3.6.7 but with added support for Windows 8.1.
The beta is separate.

One problem I have found . I have just installed Win 8.1 build 9431 64 bit. When I installed Classic Shell V 3.6.8 it no longer goes to the Classic Start menu but to the metro screen. Going back to 3.6.7 fixes this. I notice V 3.6.8 that the check box "skip metro screen' in the basic setup is missing and most likely is the reason for this issue..

Anyone else??

That's because Windows 8.1 has a setting for it. Right-click on the taskbar and select Properties.

Hello Classic shell team !

Thank you for the great work and to make Windows 8 more lovely :-)

I was also wondering about the SKIP METRO at startup option and it seems to now be called "Go to the desktop instead of start when I sign in" and it is now a Windows option on W8.1.

Would someone who had W8 and Classic Shell 3.6.7 integrated successfully and has (also successfully) upgraded to W8.1 Preview and CS 3.6.8, please post the steps you took to accomplish that task?

1. Did you need to uninstall CS 3.6.7 before updating to W8.1 for any reason?

2. Should you install CS 3.6.8 before or after updating to W8.1?

I am not asking for a detailed walkthrough of the W8.1 process unless there are steps/choices involved that may impact installing and using CS 3.6.8.

This is more of a "What came first, the chicken or the egg?" type inquiry.

Please limit replies to actual experience with the current process not theories or "I think that if...even though I haven't tried to do it", please!!!

Thanks in advance.

I don't know if desktop programs (like Classic Shell) will be preserved during an upgrade to 8.1. So I would recommend installing 3.6.8 after 8.1.

My classic shell install carried over after 8.1 upgrade. Just the original issue where start button overlapped. But fixed now.

I left 3.6.7 "in place" and went through the 8.1 d/l and install process. I then installed 3.6.8.

When I boot (now much faster than 8.0 and closer to W7 bootup speed) it gos to the Metro/tiled screen that includes a tile of my current desktop background. When I click on that it goes right to my "W7" desktop with a literal "classic shell" in the Start spot that brings up everything just the way it should!

No complaints here.

The latest 3.9.x RC and the upcoming stable release 4.0 fully and officially support Windows 8.1 RTM.
