When Classic Shell 4.0.0 or later is installed, Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 will not start, nor can it be installed. PSP hangs right at the spot where it should display its splash screen. The problem disappears as soon as Classic Shell is uninstalled. The problem does not occur with any of the v3 versions of Classic Shell.

A similar problem existed with Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 and Norton 360; Symantec eventually fixed Norton 360 so that PSP worked. You can find the details here.

To troubleshoot this. if you don't need Classic Explorer component, try running the Classic Shell installer and removing only that component while keeping the Classic Start Menu and Classic IE plugin. Then does Paint Shop Pro X2 hang?

Good guess! By disabling only Classic Explorer and leaving everything else enabled, PSP works fine.

If you need Classic Explorer functionality, you can further try some things:
Open Classic Explorer settings and check "Show all settings".
- On the File Pane tab, if you have enabled the Share Overlay icon, make sure that "Show overlay only in Explorer" is checked
- On the File Operation tab (Windows 7 only), make sure that "Enable only in Explorer" is checked.

Then log out of your user account, login again and see if Paint Shop Pro X2 crashes. That way you can enjoy Classic Explorer functionality too.
