I would like to toggle navigation pane off and on frequently. It seems nothing like this is in the list of available commands for toolbar buttons in settings for classic explorer 4.0.2. Does anyone know a way to get something similar to this? (Other than an AHK script which I know about already). I was hoping classic shell would have some comparable functionality, but maybe I can't find it. It might be an easy thing to add..?

No it's not possible to add it to the Classic Explorer toolbar without using a AutoHotkey script which sends keystrokes. Or you can use Winaero's Explorer Toolbar Editor to add a button to toggle navigation pane to the built-in Explorer command bar: http://winaero.com/comment.php?comment.news.16

Thank you very much. This is great! Except for the whole other-explorer-windows-acquire-this-setting problem, of course, but there's not much we can do about that. Apart from rewriting the shell entirely and catching up. Any volunteers?

Good news. The latest Classic Shell 4.0.6 has a built-in button now to toggle the folder/navigation pane as well as the Details pane and the Preview pane.
