Hi

I think this is a bug and apologise if you consider I have posted in the wrong place.

I have been running Classic Shell for a couple of years on my Notebook with no problems until now. I have been trying to update to the latest version.

I have a problem with updating / installing Classic Shell onto my Notebook running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64 Bit.
I can see there has been some discussion on this issue but cannot find any solutions.

When I run the latest update ClassicShellSetup_4_0_2.exe, I get the following error message: Failed to run msiexec.exe
I researched this and was recommended to extract ClassicShell 4.0.2 and run the .msi package (ClassicShellSetup64_4_0_2.msi) and when I try to do that, I get through the first steps of the set up until the Install package finds two versions of Windows Explorer running. I then select either of the two options offered and get the following results:
i. Close the applications and attempt to restart them
When I select this option the install closes Windows Explorer (the Tool Bar, system tray and Start Button, and then then after calculating space the install says there are 2 versions of Windows Explorerer and I select this option, and the system returns error 2605 and stops.. and I have to log out (Cnt + Alt + Delete) and log back in.

ii. Do not close the applications. A reboot will be required
When i select this option, I also get to the point where I get an error code 2605, and when I click OK the system uninstalls where it got to and closes.

The strange thing is when the uninstall stops the previous Classic Shell menu is there but corrupted. I can see the Classic Start Menu running but the Menu options all start with $ .. for example $Menu.Help and so on.

I really do like Classic Shell and hope you can help resolve the problem.

Daniel

The reason the text in the menu is $Menu.Help is because some files have been uninstalled. I recommend you run the installer for the previous version to install it again, then reboot, uninstall, reboot again, and then try installing the new version. Error 2605 has something to do with "server", so make sure you run the installer EXE from a local drive and not from the network.

If this fails, run the installer with the /l* option to get a log file as shown here: http://www.classicshell.net/faq/#install_commands
Attach the log file here.
