Hello,

I have the following problem: I am using a vertical taskbar (left) and two things do not seem to work:

1) "disable active corners: start" still shows the start charm, setting it to "all" blocks all as expected

2) user pic does notdid not show with any skin. I am using a local account without any fancy domain/active directory etc. User pic is set via the start screen, which also shows an "ASP.Net Machine Account" on the dropdown list.

Actually, while typing this I did a quick search about what that account is and removed it. Now the userpic shows - why classic shell was trying to pick a userpic of a different account instead of mine is beyond me.

What version of Windows are you using?
What is the position of your taskbar?

Win 8.1 pro, x64
Taskbar is vertical, on the left. This makes the start button go to the top left corner, so that the start charm overlays the show desktop button.

I can repro 1) when the taskbar is not at the bottom. As for 2), what was the logon screen showing when Classic Start menu was showing the wrong picture? Just by disabling the ASP.NET account, you got the Start menu to show the correct picture? :o

The option to disable the start screen corner only works when the taskbar is at the bottom because only then there is a conflict with the start button. It says so in the tooltip for the option.

That's true but the Show Desktop button also conflicts if the taskbar is on the left side.

Doesn't matter. The meaning of the option is "disable the start tile if it conflicts with the start button".

This is rather counter-intuitive to be honest. When taskbar is at the bottom, then the start charm is overlaying the start button perfectly - unless you replaced the start menu button of course. The start charm overlaying the show desktop button is the most jarring design break our retarded friends at Microsoft implemented.

The logical use of "disable start charm" is to disable it. I do use all the other active corners so having to disable all of them just for the start charm is less than optimal. Please add an option to disable it completely.

As for 2), it was showing the default grey background with white silhouette pic.

So I take it there won't be any changes to this?

Then you might want to change the description. I installed CS to get rid off the lower left active corner, that's clearly not what the intention behind the option is. I'd also like to see a separate option to remove that active corner no matter where the taskbar is. I don't even see why you would only make it work when the taskbar is vertical only, in the first place but eh.
