Hi

I seem to have a problem i am using classic shell with windows 8.1 and have folder redirection enabled for our start menu , this works for the windows 8 start screen but classic shell is still picking up the local roaming path for the start menu, it seems to be ignoring the settings in folder redirection GPO and registry settings in "User Shell Folders" , this is hampering me rolling this out as i cannot get it to display the correct start menu All Programs path?

Can anyone help me sort this out?

Classic Shell uses the official API for getting to the Start Menu folders. It is possible what you are doing is not enough to correctly redirect the folders in all cases.

thank you for your reply but still do not understand. i am setting this is group policy and using the offical folder redirection. i have verified that the registry contains the correct location in shell folders. what other area or setting do i need to change? as the current gpo works for windows 7 start menu and the windows 8 start screen but doesnt for for this app. do you have any suggestions on what to do?

Microsoft themselves recommend that you use the SHGetKnownFolderPath API to get the path of folders and not read the values under 'User Shell Folders'. That's what Classic Start Menu is doing.
I think folder redirection policies are not processed on a background update cycle but must be applied synchronously when a user logs on. So a logoff after redirecting using Group Policy may also help. You could also instead try redirecting using the Location tab of the Start Menu folder from its Properties.

Classic Shell 4.0.4 introduces Group Policy support for all of its settings. Amongst those are new Group Policies to control menu redirection, independent of the OS settings. Extract the ADML and ADMX files from C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\PolicyDefinitions.zip to C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions folder (for Local Group Policy). If you have Active Directory domain, extract the files to %logonserver%\sysvol\%userdnsdomain%\policies\PolicyDefinitions\. The 4 policies to redirect the menu are:

- Start Menu folder
- Programs folder
- Common Programs folder
- Common Start Menu folder

You must exit the Start menu by right clicking the Start button and then start it again from C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\ClassicStartMenu.exe.
