Hi,
I've been using Classic Shell for many years on a Windows 7 system. I've installed it on a Windows 10 system and the start menu has black lines round it, which aren't on my Windows 7 system.
Does anyone know how to get rid of the black lines please? I've attached a couple of pictures to show the difference,
Thanks,

I'm guessing you are using a special theme/hack to get that look on the taskbar,
for as far as I know Win10 can't do that.

It is possible that your theme/hack might be able to get the 3d border menu edge look,
by using the "Classic Skin" that comes with Classic Shell Start Menu program.
See if checking the "3D border" option in the skin options does anything.

R.O.B made some classic skins, but I think most don't show 3d borders on Windows 10.
He has the exact bright blue caption area bitmaps.

It might be best to download a skin with the built-in 3d border in the bitmap image.
Try "XP Classic Retro rev E" skin.

download/file.php?id=5143

It is not going to show the Windows 7 blue caption area, as it is the XP version.
Disabling the search box, font smoothing, and selecting Tahoma font gets menu look closer to what you have.
Its menu skin font size is a little bigger -9, than yours.

If the skin is not good enough, time to make your own exact Windows 7 Classic skin :)

Hi,
Yes I'm using this configuration: http://winclassic.boards.net/thread/177/reactos-taskbar-win10-desktop-classic. It has its limitations in that the Notification area icons don't work too well but, apart from that, it's the closest I've found to the old taskbar.
I am using the 'Classic Skin' and tried setting the '3D border' option but it made no difference.
As for doing my own skin, wouldn't know where to start :-).
Thanks for replying anyway,

Hi,
I tried the "XP Classic Retro rev E" skin and it does fix my original problem but the font is different.
I think I know how to change Fonts in skins using Resource Hacker, so does anyone know what the fonts are in my original post please?
Thanks,

If I compare your Win7 menu text,
looks exactly like Main_font="Tahoma",normal,10

If you open up a copy of the retro skin on the desktop with Resource Hacker
open "SKIN" folder "1"

Go to Line: 1364 (close to the end of the text)
and change the font size from -9 to "10" (without the dash).

Click on the "Compile Script" button, and save with a different name.
Copy that modified skin to the skins folder.
Might have to restart CSM for it to appear in the skin list.

If it this is too much to do, I can make a simplified skin for you sometime Friday/Saturday.

Hi,
I tried your suggestion and it only worked for the main menu, with the submenu and submenu items still having the wrong font so I also changed the other items in that section so it looks like this:
[TAHOMA_FONT]
Caption_font="Tahoma",normal,16
Main_font="Tahoma",normal,10
Main2_font="Tahoma",bold,10
Submenu_font="Tahoma",normal,10
Submenu_separator_font="Tahoma",bold,10
Submenu_separator_split_font="Tahoma",bold,10
Once I picked that skin in Classic Start Menu Settings, I also had to select the 'Tahoma font. Turn off Clear Type for sharper classic look' option at the bottom of the list of options for that skin.
This now seems to work correctly.
Thanks very much for your help,
Kevin

Yes, I was sneaky bad. :twisted:
I wanted to put more information in there but thought my overly long writing will be an overload and a turnoff. That's great that you figured it out.

If you ever want different large size font options changed,
now you know it's just below the text area you just modified.

I had started making Win7 classic buttons from screenshots.
Will upload Saturday.

I am still going make a simplified one color skin
using parts of Ivos blue caption area (the 7 looks),
just in case you or somebody else misses the Win7 look when on Win10.
I'll steal the easy change on the fly font size option from Ivos Metallic skin,
and put in the skin text script.
Maybe I'll do one other thing with a screenshot. Will see if it works.

Update
Hi balmforthk.

In case you want the Win7 classic start buttons that I was talking about,
they are in the zip here:

Hi balmforthk.

A few questions for you.
Instead of reading 7 pages of info on ReactOS shell,

Is it safe to use on Win10 operating system without crashing and destroying everything on hard drive?
If it is safe, which version did you download and which versions of CSM and Windows 10 are you using?

Hi,
I had changed skins before using Resource Hacker but it was a couple of years ago. I just needed to know what to change. Thanks for your help.
I did quite a lot of things before I got the ReactOS shell to work with everything else so I don't have exact steps. However, if you look at the first post in the thread http://winclassic.boards.net/thread/177/reactos-taskbar-win10-desktop-classic, download the 3 attachments at the bottom.
Then look on page 6, at a post by clasurol on Jul 12 2018 at 9:11pm. I basically followed those instructions. What it doesn't tell you is that you have to edit StartButton.ahk. I had to change 3 lines:
ButtonPressed = <Path to pressed start button picture>
ButtonDepressed = <Path to depressed start button picture>
Run, <Path to ROS explorer>
so they looked like this:
ButtonPressed = C:\Classic\StartButton
ButtonDepressed = C:\Classic\StartButton
Run, C:\Downloads\Explorer
This of course assumes that StartDepressed.png and StartPressed.png are in C:\Classic\StartButton and C:\Downloads\Explorer contains explorer_old.exe
To answer your questions, I installed it on a VM initially running Windows 10 version 1709. I'm using Classic Shell 4.3.1. I think some earlier versions have problems on Windows 10. I've since updated to Windows 10 version 1803. I have had no problems such as crashing and destroying everything but I haven't used it that much. I would suggest you do as I have have and install it on a system that doesn't matter if it breaks. Plus, of course, using a VM, you can take it back to an earlier version if you have problems.
Hope this helps,

I was only using a high contrast Win 10 theme for this classic type skin,
which is kind of blah without those 3d edges.

I got more and more excited reading your instructions, thinking I can do that.
Once I saw "VM", it kind of put a damper on it.
You see for me, luckily my motherboard supports 5 hard drive bays for most OS: XP,2000,2003,WIN 7 to Win 10.
If any chance of unrecoverable os,
It's easier for me to just boot up an older os with the classic looks.
Spend a few days on it as everything still works, antivirus, internet, email, programs.

I appreciate you spending the time writing the instructions, as it will help other people
with only one hard drive with Win 10 1803, CSM 4.3.1 on it.
Thank you.

I'm going to try your instructions sometime in the near future,
out of curiosity, to see how far React OS has progressed.
Thanks again.

If you go to this thread http://winclassic.boards.net/thread/177/reactos-taskbar-win10-desktop-classic?page=7 and look at my posts and the replies and the bottom of page 7 and on page 8, you'll see that ReactOS has not been worked on for some time.
Could you not make one of your disks dual boot for, say Windows 7 and Windows 10. Backup the Windows 10 partition and then you can always get back to where you started? I know it's more work than having a VM, but it's just a suggestion.
If you're interested, I've been playing with Windows 10 without ReactOS and got it to look like the attached picture. One thing I still don't like about it is the lack of relief on taskbar icons and the difficulty distinguishing where one windows starts and another ends, as can be seen in the picture.
Regards,

Looking at one ReactOS site looks impressive.
Over 9,000,000 lines of code.

Looking at another site, after many years of development, it's still alpha, not even beta.
I believe it's going to take many years to get a stable release.

I do use a dual partition boot for Vista/Win7 on a front load drive.
Had problems with dual boot drives when one system corrupts the shared boot information.

When I do get to try out the ReactOS taskbar/full system,
I'll use one system dedicated physical drive with a good image backup.
Just a little busy with other things at the moment. :)

About your screenshot without ReactOS

Default Windows 10 is no good for me.
I had to turn on color for title bars just to figure which window was active.
Yeah, depressing. The taskbar needs a little more definition.
Seems like MS don't want to go that route.
