I installed the latest version (v4.25) some three to four months ago. And I have no complaints about the program itself except for one thing. About once every 3 to 4 weeks I get a message that a new "Classic shell" version v4.25 has been released. But I already have installed that version !!!!

Did I do something wrong ? Is there a clash with other (known) software ? Do I have to change some setting in a menu ?

I searched the forum for an answer but didn't find any other similar posts.
I assume that Classic Shell registers itself somewhere in the registry but I up to now I find anything that would suggest that the program has "forgotten" to register itself properly.

I use Windows 7 with all the MS updates without the exception of perhaps 3 or 4.

Your probably right about something not being registered properly
You could try uninstalling, and re-installing classic shell, or simply disabling the update message by navigating to your install directory ("C:\Program Files\Classic Shell" by default) and run ClassicShellUpdate then un-check 'Automatically check for new versions'
as classic shell isnt something that NEEDS frequent updates for security patches and whatnot (especially on W7)

If you are familiar with Registry editing, use Regedit to go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\IvoSoft\ClassicShell and delete the values there "RemindedVersion", "LastUpdateTime" and "LastUpdateVersion".

Yes, I know how to use REGEDIT. I only have 2 of the 3 (sub-)keys in the registry. "Reminded Version" is missing. Perhaps Classic Shell (CS) forgets to add that subkey upon installation ? (But then CS should already have LOTS of complaints)

I copied & pasted the relavent part below. I think it can be helpful.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\IvoSoft\ClassicShell]
"LastUpdateVersion"=dword:04020004
"LastUpdateTime"=dword:15b2a4d6

- Does it matter that in another section of the registry the version is registered as "4.2.1" ? Or is that the version of the MSI package or un-installer ?
- Shouldn't be "LastUpdateVersion" be "dword:04020005" (Mind the "5" !!!!!!!!). I know there's a CS version "v4.24" Wouldn't throw that CS "off the rails" ?? Bug in CS ?? (I had installed v4.24 as well). Time to check the program code (again) ?

I'll report what I will come across ...............

If you delete those values, and check for updates again using the "Classic Shell Update" link in your Start Menu -> All Programs -> Classic Shell, the "LastUpdateTime" and "LastUpdateVersion" values will be re-created with the correct values. Hopefully that should stop the update prompts. No idea how they didn't get updated after you updated to 4.2.5. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Your help has (for the time being ???) solved the problem. I had been fiddling (=deleting) with the MSI package somewhere in the past. I assume that was the reason why it all got "a bit wobbly". Tried different things and ultimately I put REVO Uninstaller to work. It was able to delete all the required registry keys. Then installing was "a piece of cake". I'll keep an eye on what might happen next. But I assume it's all OK now.

I checked the registry and all the entries now show the latest installed version (v4.24). We'll see how things evolve from there. I am still VERY curious whether or not it now will work. Perhaps I'll stumble over a new bug but for now, all is OK. (I like to report bugs in programs I like !!!).

Again, thanks for your help.
