I just upgraded my Win 8.1 Pro X64 computer to Win 10 Pro X64. Since I still don't like the Win10 start menu, it was necessary to reinstall the latest version of Classic Start.

All is well except several custom additions that I previously made to the start menu are missing. On the main level of the menu, I had added a few folders (Web Apps, Video Apps, Music Apps, etc) and had moved programs in those categories from the second level of the standard ClassicStart menu to those folders. i.e. It made those programs easier to find.

After upgrading to Win 10 and ClassicStart 4.2.4, those custom additions disappeared. It's going to be a real pain to find and recreate those custom folders.

I know that additions to the start menu are normally stored in the following folder:
"C:\Users\UserID\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu" but my previous custom additions don't exist after the upgrade.

Can someone help me find these custom folders from the older versions of Win 8.1 & ClassicStart?

Also check this folder: %appdata%\ClassicShell\Pinned

Thank-you for the reply Gaurav.

Actually, I spent most of yesterday manually rebuilding my custom additions to the menu.

With your suggestion I did find the old custom menu files. They were located in "C:\ClassicShellMenu\filename.

This now seems obvious and I can't explain how I was manually unable to find them previously.

However, a couple of odd issues:
1. I can't understand why the upgrade to Win 10 & ClassicStart 4.2.4 would remove these custom additions from the menu.
2. I searched for the "custom addition file folder name" using the search window at the bottom of the ClassicStart menu as well as the Win 10 Cortana search function. Neither found the file folders. Just now I used the search function in File Explorer and it found the folders. I guess that I'll have to relearn how to use the Win 10 search function!

Thanks again for the help!

1. How had you added the custom additions to the menu? By right clicking and pinning or by using the Customize Start Menu tab? Only items added using Customize Start Menu tab will be migrated by Classic Shell. Items pinned by right clicking are shortcuts stored on the file system. It is up to Windows 10 Setup/upgrade process to migrate these correctly.

2. To search any file or folder on your disk drive, it must be added to Control Panel -> Indexing Options. Also, Windows 10 search is flaky and doesn't always show the best result. Also, the search terms you use for searching must include the name of the items you had added. Only then can they be found.

Thanks again Gaurav,

1. Guilty as charged! I added the menu folders and shortcuts by right clicking the menu and adding a folder, then dragging the shortcuts to that folder.

2. I see what you mean about the flaky search.

Thanks again. Now I know how to avoid this problem in the future.
