When I try and install I get the following message and install fails: "Module C:\Program files.....ClassicShell\ClassicExplorer32.dll failed to register. H result-2147024890. Contact support personnel." What's wrong please and how can I install successfully?

How are you running the installer? By normally double clicking it or by running it as administrator?

I've done both. No joy. Same dialogue box comes up.

By the way - in case it helps:

This is a govt education laptop. New one. The first one I was given loaded Classic Shell ok but it kept crashing ('blue screen of death' - IRQL (?) driver not less or equal...). Might have been the Classic Shell but not sure. This laptop is a replacement which wasn't crashing and we want to load the Shell again to see if it is that. Many staff (me especially) would prefer to have the Start menu back with Windows 8.1...but not if it crashes all the time.

PS I'm not an IT tech.

Since the failure is in the Classic Explorer component, and you want the start menu, you can disable all components in the installer except the start menu. See if that works.
BTW, BSOD usually means a fault in the driver or hardware. UI software like Classic Shell can't cause it, at least not directly.

Thanks for that advice (and thanks for the previous reply Guarev). I'll give that a go.

Cheers, Ric.

Just tried it again (run as administrator). Only selected the Classic Start Menu (and in its drop down box I selected the Start Menu only). Same message exactly comes up. Damn!

Any other ideas?

Ric

Are you saying that you are only installing the start menu, yet still you are getting an error about ClassicExplorer32.dll?

Yes exactly. I just tried it again - saved to file, ran as administrator, selected classic start menu only - same dialog box blocking further action.

That's weird, because ClassicExplorer32.dll is not part of the start menu. Are you sure you are not getting error -2147024891 for the StartMenuHelper32.dll, like Дмитрий here? viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2848

After your last reply I thought "No, it must be me..."

So I went back and checked how I installed (again). Found the problem. When exporting a pst file from Outlook, which I have done many times, one only highlights the folder for export to select it. In the installation settings, the top one is selected/highlighted which includes all others. I simply highlighted Classic Start Menu, thinking this meant I was choosing that one instead of all of them, when I should have deselected the unwanted ones in the drop-down boxes. Doh! But I am being honest at least!

Anyway, it then loaded fine. Now we'll see if the laptop starts crashing again. Maybe it was to do with the Explorer and won't happen now, though I get your comment above 5:38pm. I have seen a dialog box re error with HD Graphics driver or something (it disappeared before I could copy it). Maybe the Classic Shell was triggering the existing fault, I don't know. However, I'm the only staff member that has had this crashing problem and I am the only one who loaded the Classic Shell.

Sorry to take up your time on a simple error! Much appreciated - you did lead me to the solution in the end. I will mark this issue "Solved".

Ric
