I will be upgrading to Citrix XenDesktop (App Editon) and just need to know if Classic Shell this will work in a Citrix environment which will be running Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2.

If you can, can I use folder redirection as well via Group Policy?

Thanks.

It's been reported to work on Server 2012 and works over RDP so there should be no reason why it shouldn't work, although it's not specifically tested by me on XenDesktop. Install it & report it here if it works or doesn't work.

Folder redirection of Start Menu folder should work but may require a logoff before it's effective.

Thanks for the response.

If I cannot use Group Policy to configure my Citrix servers (I have 18), can you advise where I need to make the changes (registry or file path) on the individual servers so all users will automatically use Classic Menu, configured in a particular way?

It is possible to enforce settings easily for all users using the registry. Look in the help file -> Administrative Settings section for the Classic Start Menu page.

Basically, you create the same setting which are in HKCU\Software\IvoSoft\ClassicStartMenu\Settings branch inside HKLM\Software\IvoSoft\ClassicStartMenu. That enforces settings for all users, but you can also apply different default settings for all users without enforcing them if you append _Default to the name of the value. The help file explains it properly.

Classic Shell 4.0.4 introduces Group Policy support for its own settings. The file, C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\PolicyDefinitions.zip includes the policy definitions. If you have an Active Directory domain, extract the files to %logonserver%\sysvol\%userdnsdomain%\policies\PolicyDefinitions\ or whatever your Group Policy Central Store is. For Local Group Policy, extract them to C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions folder.

Amongst those are new Group Policies to control menu redirection, independent of the OS settings. The 4 policies to redirect the menu are:

- Start Menu folder
- Programs folder
- Common Programs folder
- Common Start Menu folder

You must exit the Start menu by right clicking the Start button or by running "C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\ClassicStartMenu.exe" -exit and then start it again from "C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\ClassicStartMenu.exe".
