Not all features work in Windows 8. The status bar, the replacement copy dialog, and the Up button don't.

The loss of the status bar features is most unfortunate. But then the Windows Shell team has broken a whole lot of other functionality so the OS overall remains broken even after 8.1.

... so does this mean I should not update to Win8.1
... broken (penetrated ?) or really, really stuffed up ?

I am trying to modify my daughters Dell laptop with its Win8 OS

Will greatfully accept blunt razor blades if I stuff up !

I meant that features that were removed or broken in Windows 8 besides the Start Menu remain the same in 8.1, and that Windows 7 is still better if you don't use "Apps".

ive got a feeling a lot of the broken stuff will be re-implemented over time, maybe not with 8.1, but possibly with 8.2 whenever it comes out :P(or maybe windows 9..). I believe windows 8 was rushed (like vista), both of which brought major changes to the OS. and breaks to a lot of the older features.

I think the best long term solution would be if someone developed a full shell replacement (remember LiteStep?) that allows classic Windows-like look and behavior by default. That way people would be free to upgrade to modern OSes for the improvements under the hood, without having to take it together with the random GUI changes Microsoft decides on.

It doesn't have to stick only to classic Windows GUI, but having the flexibility to feel and function like that would make more people adopt it, and maybe from there explore other skins/themes/forms.

It's the same problem with every new Windows version. While some new things are good, others are bad, and some old features are gone. It's been like that since the Win9x to XP transition, and it's been getting worse. If Win8 is any indication, Win9 is going to be completely unusable without a good 3rd party shell. :)

Classic Shellers, if you try the latest beta version of Classic Shell linked from the home page, it now has status bar features of Classic Explorer fully operational on Windows 8!!
