Post subject:  Is there an option to sort by file extension not association

I use an addon for windows explorer(xp-sp3) that lets me sort by file extension.

I am wondering if this capability or an equivalent is available in classic shell?
I find the sort by type useless, especially when converting file between formats.
I MUST! be able to tell gif, from jpg or jpeg or png, even if I use gimp to open them all.

Not being able to tell them apart at a glance will mean the upgrade is impossible for me.
I held off upgrading from Win2k until I found it.
Vista was horrid looking and unstable, now 7 is simply horrid, while 8 makes wonder when the computer is going to ring.

I graduated from preschool and kindergarten quite some time ago.
I no longer need my hand held, or to be limited to big fat pencils and pale water colors.
I grew up, I can even write for myself now and use a pen, yet MS thinks we are still watching romper room or sesame street.

I want to use a computer not an anime terminal.
The design of the newer versions seems intended to preclude serious work being done.

Simply hoping a sane option can be returned to keep it usable, otherwise I will simply wait for ReactOs to go beta.
Then I can simply add any option I need myself.

Doors.

Microsoft removed the column handler shell extension type, so not possible. But Windows 8 does seem to have a "File extension" column although I don't think that OS is worth using for a file extension column.
