While in "Details" view in Windows 8.1 there's a button on View tab of the Ribbon, that auto resizes all columns width to fit content.
I didn't find button with the same function in Classic Explorer options.
There are several ways to make this without a button:
  1. by pressing "Ctrl" and "+" (Ctrl and the plus key)
  2. by right clicking the top line of details and selecting "resize all columns width"
  3. by double clicking the border of needed columns (this works only for one column)
But the button in Classic Explorer Bar would make it much more convenient.

Try this compiled AutoHotkey EXE script I made. Add it as a Custom Command button. Explorer must be in Details view of course when you click it.

This is just what I am looking for, too. :D

But could you please steer me to any forum entry that would explain how to add a AutoHotkey EXE script as a Custom Command button? I tried searching the forum for how to create a Custom Command, but the search threw away those terms as being too common. Maybe it is called something else?

Sorry, but I am not real experienced with Classic Shell yet.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

1. Download the above ZIP file and extract "SizeAllColumnsToFitWhenRun.exe" to the Desktop.
2. Copy this file to C:\Users\<YOUR USER NAME>\AppData\Local\ClassicShell. Then you can delete this file from the Desktop.
3. Open Classic Explorer Settings.
4. Go to the tab called Toolbar Buttons.
5. Scroll down in the right column and drag "Custom" to the left column. Position it by dragging it up or down wherever you want. This will be the button you will be clicking to resize all columns to fit.
6. Double click "Custom" in the left column to open the "Edit Toolbar Item" dialog.
7. In the "Command:" field, just type, copy-paste or browse to the path where you put the EXE. For example,

"%LocalAppdata%\ClassicShell\SizeAllColumnsToFitWhenRun.exe"

8. Pick a nice icon that you like. The icon included in the ZIP is the one used by the Explorer Ribbon. Also, optionally give it a label and tooltip. If you don't add a Label, only the icon will be shown.

9. Click OK everywhere to save settings and re-open the Explorer window.
10. Your toolbar button should be ready. It will only work in DETAILS view and sometimes it doesn't work if the focus is somewhere else in the Explorer window for example, in the address bar. The focus must be in the file pane for it to work.

Here's a screenshot of the Edit Toolbar Item dialog to help you set it up:
