Hello folks, I have some issues with shortcuts that should not be displayed in the startmenu. I configured a redirected startmenu from Windows. The startmenu folder points to a share. On that share we create folders with application shortcuts. Theses shortcuts are secured by permissions (the “users” group has been removed and there are either explicit user names or other groups for users). E.g. a folder called MyApps Inside there are 3 shortcuts - UserGui.lnk - AdminConsole.lnk - Help.lnk . The users group has been removed from tha AdminConsol.lnk so that only members of the Administrator group can launch this application. The Windows startmenu (no matter which version) does not display this shortcut when the user does not have the granted access to it. The classic startmenu however, displays always the shortcuts. For a user with no access, it displays a white sheet icon with the shortcut name. As the user has no permission on the shortcut, he can not start the application, so it should not make sense to display it. I wonder if there is an option to hide shortcuts for which users do not have read/execute permissions, like it is done automatically with the Windows Startmenu? I did not find anything in the GPO settings. Best Regards, Pete |

I don't know how the Windows menu determines if you have no permissions to access the link. The Classic Shell menu simply shows the contents of the folder. How does the folder look in Explorer? What icon do you see there? |

Yes, in Windows Explorer the folder looks exactly the same as in the classic startmenu. You still see the blank icons, but you can not access them. I think that the Windows menu checks the permission attributes. When there is no read permission for the user on the shortcut, it is simply not displayed in the menu. |

OK. I'll add this to the list of things to investigate. I don't know yet how to read the file permissions, or if it will add overhead to the performance of the start menu. |

I do not know the language in which the classic menu is programmed. In C++ for example, you can do it by using the _fstat function and checking for the S_IREAD bit. This bit is set if the user has read permission on a file. |
