 I am not a techy so a friend installed classic shell on my new laptop as I couldn't get on with windows 8 . Now none of the apps on original apps page work, When I click on one the screen fills with it's colour then reverts to the apps page. They don't work from the shell start page either, Help please as I've a daughter in Thailand that I need to skype,

Classic Shell only adds a Start Menu to Windows. It doesn't modify any system files or change Windows 8's behavior in any other way, it doesn't even touch system settings. So something else is causing the problem. Try opening a command prompt as administrator and give this command: SFC /scannow And let the scan complete. Restart your computer after that and try if Modern Apps work again. Skype has 2 versions, desktop and the Windows Store version. If the Modern version doesn't work, download the desktop version from skype.com. |

thanks - have followed scan advice but no change - apps still disabled. Skype download will not complete either when I double click on it Any further suggestions welcome please. |

Windows 8 comes with feature "Reset and Refresh". Try that from PC Settings. Or try System Restore to restore the OS to a state when it was working properly. |
