On my Win7 machine, I'm able to configure Classic Shell to show small icons like on XP, but when I installed it on my Win 8 machine, it does not allow me to do so - I cannot see any configuration options for this... Can anyone assist/advise? |

Which theme are you using?, some themes don't directly support a 'small icons' option Also check the Menu look tab, to see if changing small icon size or large icon size is what your looking for |

I always use the Classic theme with Classic Shell. However, on the Win8 machine, I am just using the default one - which theme would allow this to work? Thanks! |

im guessing the default one is windows vista/windows 7 if you want smaller icons click on the skin tab, and check "small Icons" if this still isnt good enough, click "all settings" at the bottom left of the window, and view the Menu look tab, then try setting the icon sizes mentioned previously |

Will try playing around with the Win8 themes and try to get something working - thanks for the advice! (I've tried to take my Classic Shell settings from the Win7 machine and match it with the Win8 one, but it still remains a problem despite my doing so...) |

hmm, if you imported your settings from w7 to w8, and it didn't change anything. maybe your DPI settings are off,try navigating to: "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display" on both systems and see if they match, if-not this is an actual bug. |

I will also check this tonight, after reviewing both machines. Thanks! |

Wait, your post title says taskbar small icons? Do you want small icons on the taskbar? Right click an empty area of the taskbar and check the "Use small taskbar buttons" option. If you mean small icons inside your Start Menu, right click the Start button, open Settings. Enable All Settings at the bottom. On the SKIN tab, every skin has a "Small icons" option. Check that and click OK. |

Yes, I want the small shortcut icons on the taskbar, like XP has.Basically Classic Shell is allowing the icons behave normally (as they do in Win7 (no idea how Win8 is supposed to act, but I guess the same as Win7)), by "pinning" and "unpinning", which is effectively useless, as it uses up too much space. Also, the WinXP version allows you to shorten the taskbar and some of the shortcuts can be hidden, depending on the length you drag the taskbar along at the bottom... |

I have just attempted all of the suggestions, and was able to create a new Quick Launch taskbar on the Win8 machine. It states "Quick Launch" there. However, it does not have the shortcuts viewable immediately to click on from the bottom bar - one has to click the " >> " to have it expand first. Is there any way to get the direct shortcuts available at bottom, so all one has to do is simply click on the shortcut to start the application/program? TIA again! I'm just debating whether I should keep Win 8 or install Win 7 on this new laptop - but Win 7 reportedly has too many services/manages RAM less effectively than Win 8... |

You must right click an empty area of the taskbar and uncheck the option "Lock the taskbar". After doing that, you can right click the text "Quick Launch" itself and uncheck the option to show "Show text" and "Show title" etc. You can drag the vertical dotted line to adjust the width of Quick Launch and then Lock the taskbar again when you're done. |

Got it - thanks a lot!! ^ Now, how do we get rid of the Seattle SkyThingy screen that shows up first on startup, requiring one to hit a key to get into the logon prompt? What happened with CTRL-ALT-DEL on Win8? |

You should be able to do that in a program called "lock screen customizer". Follow this guide http://techget.net/how-to-customize-windows-8-lock-screen/ Hope that helps! |
