Post subject:  How To Show Downloads Menu?

hi

using windows folder properties, i moved the Downloads folder to a different location on the drive.
now i do not see the Download menu on Classic Start.

I noticed the Downloads folder is enabled in Windows Start settings, if that's relevant.

How to show Downloads menu in Start?

thx!

Go to Customize Start Menu tab in Start Menu Settings.

Double click the icon of "Downloads" item to bring up Edit Menu Item dialog.

Erase the "Command" field's contents if they're present and in the "Link" field, type path to new Downloads folder. Click OK everywhere to save settings.

I don't see downloads in Customize Start Menu, in current or available.

see screenshot of User Files menu-- i moved Downloads and Documents, but still getting Documents menu.

see pic of User Files and This PC-- both have only one of each.

i moved Documents to same drive, outside of Users folder: C:\Documents

i moved Downloads to a different drive, D:\Downloads

thx

You can show any item you want in the menu from Customize Start Menu tab. Add a "Custom" item by dragging it from right column to left on Customize Start Menu tab and double click it to set its Command OR Link.

If you clicked "No" for the prompt which asks you whether you want to move your files, then you'll see two Downloads folders.

"Downloads" is not listed in the right column.

You have to use "Custom", not "Downloads". Add a custom item, then double-click on it to edit the properties. The Link dropdown will have the Downloads folder. Select it, and that would automatically pick the right path and icon.

oh, i see. That worked!

Solved, tho i suggest Downloads should be available without adding as custom menu item, even if user changed location of Downloads to an external drive.

Also suggest you display some additional tips on the Custom adder dialog box-- i struggled a bit with the "Command" field, until i realized i did not need to pick a command-- i only needed to pick the folder in the "Link" box.

"Note: Enter a link, not a command, to display a file-directory on Start menu."

Also, suggest you change "Link" label to "Path" or "File or Folder", since it's not a hyperlink, it's a filepath. Calling it "Link" is confusing.

thx!

There are many folders that may be of interest to you. Having a separate item in the tree is not practical. That's why Custom exists - to hook any folder you wish.

Sorry, that needs a bit more explanation.

The items you can select in the Customize Start Menu page correspond to "commands". Commands have special behavior, that is not simply to display some shell folder. For historical reasons some commands do correspond to folders, like Pictures and Music, because that's how things were done in early versions of Classic Shell.

For linking to an arbitrary folder you have to use the custom item. But it is not all it does. You can have a custom command that runs some program, or a batch file, or a combination between a program and a shell folder.

I understand the flexible utility of the Custom option.

But Downloads is not an "arbitrary" folder. It's a core user folder, like Documents ( which does not require me to manually add with a Custom item).

Thx!

I was wondering if the Downloads menu can also be shown as a link as opposed to a menu.
This is mostly because I like having the Downloads folder as a link and I don't need a whole menu to open.
And as mentioned before I agree with the Downloads folder being in the user folders, so I don't get why it would be excluded from Classic Shell.

Love the program though, the Windows 10 start menu is really bad

Just set it to Display as a Link then, instead of a menu. It's all there in Settings -> Customize Start Menu tab. Double click its icon on that tab to show Edit Menu Item.
