Post subject: | Classic Start Menu does not launch automatically - Win10 |
Hi, Classic Start Menu was installed under Windows 10 64 Pro and theems to work perfectly. But after (each) new start of Windows there was no Classic Start Menu but the Windows 10 standard menu. When I start the Classic Star Menu manually everything is fine - until next Windows start. What I've tried (without Success): - Copy a shortcut to the autostart folder (any user and my user) - Registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\Policies\ Explorer - New Entry"NoSimpleStartMenu" alsREG_DWORD with Value 1 - gpedit.mscforcing Classical StartMenu Any other Ideas? Many Thanks ![]() |

Download the Classic Shell Utility from here: http://www.classicshell.net/downloads/ Run it, save a system log file and send it to me. |

Make sure "Start automatically for this user" setting is turned on on the General Behavior tab of Classic Start Menu settings. If it still does not start automatically, create a shortcut to C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\ClassicStartMenu.exe and paste it in your Startup folder at C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. |

For me, I need to click the start button 3 times and wait and wait before I can access the menu's. I read something somewhere a few weeks ago about how to speed it up, but I did not see that I have any of the time consuming options selected. Makes it not worth the use. |

The menu is trying to resolve the information about the frequently used Metro apps and for some reason it is taking a really long time. The two I see in the dumps are "getting started" and "maps". Are those two apps working for you when you launch them? Also, even if it takes a long time, the information is supposed to be remembered. It should not be slow the second time you open the menu. Is it slow for you every time or only after you log in? |

I have no idea what "getting started" and "maps even refers to". I had to restart the computer to recreate the behavior. But even if the computer has been up and running for hours and everything else is perfect when I try to launch the CS, it takes all that time. Are getting started and maps part of CS? |

@maestro89, "Getting Started" and "Maps" are Windows 10 apps. You can launch them from All Programs -> Apps folder. |

Do we know why those apps are interfering with CS start-up and how to fix that? |

No, the menu startup should not be affected, in the ideal case, but somehow it is. So please see if you can start those apps from the "Apps" folder as Ivo asked and whether they run normally or are the apps damaged (open but close immediately, or cannot be run?). Also, is the menu slow for you every time you open it or only the first time after you log in? |

I do not have Maps or Getting Started apps installed. When I go to the windows store to download them, nothing happens when I click get app. When I did a search for maps - the only thing my computer has was choose a default map app - when I select that I get the attached error message.

The list of frequently used apps refers to those apps but they appear to be corrupted or deleted. You can do two things: 1) clear all recent usage info from this registry key: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist\{CEBFF5CD-ACE2-4F4F-9178-9926F41749EA}\Count 2) disable the recent apps in the start menu - uncheck "Show recent Metro apps" in the Main Menu tab in the Classic Shell settings |

BTW, even if the default apps settings don't work for you, something is seriously messed up with the Metro system on your end. Maybe you deleted some files that belong to Windows. I would recommend to at least run a system scan with "sfc /scannow" to see if those get repaired. |

I used option 2 as suggested and no the CS actually opens quickly and I can begin to actually use it. I could not understand why anyone would want this when it behaved as it did previously - I'll also work on a solution for the corrupted apps (strange since this computer is only 2 weeks old) thank you. |

Thanks for such a great product! I wish MS would realize we just don't want the gimmicky animations on Start menu but just a simple, consistent and streamlined process. I have been having the exact same problems with Classic Shell 4.3 on a newly built Windows 10 64 bit Home edition desktop after having no problems with Classic Shell on the older Win 10 64 bit Pro desktop and no problems on a 32 bit Win 10 Pro laptop. Only variation was that sometimes the Shell icon was super imposed over the original but sightly larger Win 10 Start icon. In theory if you were really careful with cursor placement you could use either start option. For me it just created confusion. Trying out option 2 recommended above myself before reinstalling yet again....for me the only way I could get Classic Shell back was to uninstall it (I used iObit Clean Uninstall) and re-install it. Everything was fine until I restarted PC but haven't needed to mess around with the settings or menu before so don't know my way around it that well yet. |
