Search for "windows update" in the start menu. It should be in the PC Settings section. Drag it to the desktop to create a shortcut. Rename the shortcut to whatever you want, and pick a nice icon. Then pin it to the start menu. After that you can delete the icon from the desktop.

Thanks Ivo. The search comes up with no Windows Update but it does have "Check for updates". Won't allow me to drag that to the desktop. Seems to allow dragging to the taskbar, but then disappears when I release the mouse button.

It should find "Windows Update Settings" or something like that.

It does find Windows Update Settings, but the same thing happens when I try dragging that to the desktop or the taskbar.

Are you searching using the Classic Shell menu or Cortana?

Using the CS menu (click on Start icon). Cortana is disabled.

OK. So you are able to find the "Windows Update Settings" item, right? Does it work when you click it?

Yes, brings me to the Update & Security screen. Interestingly, when I right-click on Windows Update from that screen, it offers me an option to Unpin from Start. But it's not pinned to Start. Nothing happens when I click Unpin and then click Pin to Start.

@weamish, Try this:

1. Search for: Windows Update
2. In search results, right click "Check for updates" or "Windows Update settings" and then click Explore.
3. An Explorer window will open with the item selected.
4. Now right click it and click Copy.
5. Right click on the Desktop and click "Paste shortcut".
6. Now right click the newly created shortcut on the Desktop and click "Pin to Start Menu (Classic Shell)".
7. After that, you can delete the shortcut from the Desktop.
