Try if this works. Open Control Panel: Folder Options. On the View tab, locate and uncheck the option "Restore previous folder windows at logon". Now restart and see if the folder opens again.

Hello GauravK

thank you for your support. This option was unchecked allready. So that is not the reason why classic shell open the folder at system start.

Some other methods of skipping the Metro screen involve launching Explorer. They have the side effect of showing a folder like what you describe. Is it possible you used something like that in the past?

Look for things in your Startup folder, as well as for tasks in the scheduler.

@PoorGirl, what is the "actual" name of the Folder that Opens, is it something like: Computer : WhatEverName (C:) : Program. ???And then you see an Explorer window pointing to an actual folder named: Program ?

@Ivo, if this is the case for PoorGirl, or depending on the Name of the Folder opened by the Explorer window, this may be related to an very VERY OLD problem dating back to the Windows 95/98 days where if someone had both "C:\Program Files" AND also a "C:\Program" folders, some shareware opened a "C:\Program" Explorer windows when running their launcher or code. This usually happened with International versions of Windows (outside the US) where in some countries Microsoft Windows installed SOME software in a default folder simply named "C:\Program".

I will stop here in case this does not pan out, but if it does, in the early 2000 (probably 1998-1999), I had a web page explaining in detail this problem. http://pages.infinit.net/mrobich/program_folder.html (this is just a pure TXT version of an old web page I use to have and no longer support).

This problem looks suspiciously like what is explained here: http://dottech.org/76495/how-to-automat ... dows-boot/

Check the Shell value in the registry. It should just say "explorer.exe".

That is strange. I have change the Shell value in the registry. Now only explorer.exe is in the data column. But now the start button of classic shell is not there (it is enabled) and i have to start it manual.

Maybe you disabled the ClassicShellService. To reset everything, uninstall Classic Shell, reboot, then install again. Your settings will be preserved.

Dear Ivo,

thank you for ur support. But that was not the reason. I have uninstalled and installed classic shell. but the start button is not in the corner. :-( Now i have put a link at the desktop for the classic shel because i missed the start menue at windows 8 and your classic shell is great and i am glad that the other folders are not open at starting the computer. maybe i have to take the classic shell into the autostart folder ??

It is hard to diagnose the problem any further remotely. What you can do is place a shortcut to ClassicStartMenu.exe in your Startup folder. This will make it start automatically although with delay of few seconds.

This morning

everything is good. No folder is open and the start button is in the corner. perhaps classic shell need one night for the new conditions ;-)

The way to fix the problem:
1. be sure that the shell value in the registry only say explorer.exe
2. install the shell new
3. wait - classic shell will do the job normally

Nice Sunday to all of you and thank you for your help
