This used to work well in Windows 8.1 now even if I open a few text or document files, the list of recently opened files is empty on Windows 10

Please help

Recent Items list is still maintained by Windows, it is only shown by Classic Shell. Go to the Settings app in Windows 10 (Win key+i) > Personalization > Start and turn on "Show recently opened items in Jump Lists on Start or the taskbar".
