I'm not sure if the is a "feature" or a bug, and whether this is in Classic Shell and/or Win 10 (64-bit).

Here's the problem.

1. I clean installed Win Pro 10, 64-bit.
2. I tried getting the display settings to something simple (a blue-gray with a darker accent for taskbar, etc.). (This has turned out to be a major "do", not a problem in Win 8 as it wasn't trying to set colors for you, I dare say XP was far more flexible).
3. After several attempts at this I installed CS 4.2.1
4. At first things seemed to go well as in previous versions (Win Pro 8.1 64-bit and CS 4.1.0)
5. I'm unsure exactly what happened, but I ended up at the Metro screen where I tried de-installing several of the junk apps. This was successful.
6. There also appeared a left pointing Arrow (Back?) between the Start button and and the new Search icon which I had reduced to the icon only (no entry box)
7. Pressing the Back arrow cycled me through the Metro or Universal apps (like Edge), but did not send me back to the Desktop.
8. When in Metro I never saw a "Desktop" box that would get you back to the Desktop

The problem is there appeared to be no way to get back to Desktop.

9. Un-installing CS left the original Start Menu, but without the previous Metro boxes to the right of the Menu columns.
10. I rebooted, but no change in behavior - still the Metro start screen only.
11. I finally used the Restore Point that was generated (fortunately, as I should have, but the system or CS set it).
12. This fixed things; however, the deleted apps did not reappear.
13. I took screen shots of all the CS settings *before* this happened (so they are available).

I'm not sure where to go from here - reinstall?, post jpgs of the settings?, try 4.2.1 on my laptop with Win 8.1 and CS 4.1.0 (as in 4. above)?, etc.

My apologies for cross-posting.

Thanks in advance.

It looks like on your Windows 10, the Start screen/menu is opening in full screen mode. You can press the Esc key to close it and return to the Desktop. In Windows 10, Microsoft removed the "Desktop" tile.

Press Win+S and type "Start full screen" and then it will show you an option to control if Start opens full screen. Turn it off.

For Windows 10, you should use Classic Shell 4.2.4 or later.

Click your notification icon and make sure Tablet Mode is not on. If it is, turn it off and everything will be normal again.
