We have two new machines that we built that run Windows 8.1. After we installed Classic Shell the machines will not shut down. They power off for 1-2 seconds then boot back up. I uninstalled Classic Shell on one of the machines, and it now shuts down properly. Any ideas?

1) Are you sure the machine was shutting down correctly before Classic Shell?
2) How were you shutting down before installing Classic Shell?
3) If you shut down the same way as before (instead of from the start menu) does it work?
4) If you hold down Shift when you shut down from the start menu, does it work?

I've also seen this problem over the last week or so. Since uninstalled (and no shutdown problems since) it so unable to do any more testing at the moment. This info might help if the same problem.

Windows 8.1 x64
Would hang on shutdown about 50% of the time, just hang with black screen, power LED lit and no activity or recovery possible (this might be a BSOD type error as I disabled automatic restart in Windows). Happens whether using shutdown menu or power button.
Found in event log 1530 events with user profile issues - might be connected.
Tried on 2 different PCs (both Intel i5s) and also after re-installing Windows.

I installed Classic Start last night (and love it). However, I also cannot Shut Down unless I exit Classic Start and use the standard windows button to shutdown.

What happens if you press Win+X and shut down from there without existing Classic Shell?

Hi Ivo,

Thanks for the suggestion. I found that when my system was booting off of a mirrored RAID 1 array, the issue happened every time. When I took the array apart and booted off of only a single disk, Classic Start was able to shut down the machine just fine. I put it back into the array and tried again just to be sure that was the issue, and sure enough, this seemed to be the only reason why mine wouldn't shut down.

I am no longer using the array so I can't try your suggestion, however, I believe I may still be having issues when trying to Restart but haven't had a lot of time to test. I will test more and try your suggestions if I run into issues and report back.

Thanks,

Nico

Can't remember if I tried this (assume you mean shutting down outside of Classic Shell) but I did see the issue when using the power button on the PC to initiate a shutdown. Can't reinstall at moment to test though as I'm away.

When I click on SHUTDOWN in the START MENU in Classic Shell, after the screen goes blank, the light on the case stays on, SOMETIMES.
I'm wondering what would happen if I exit Classic Start Menu and use the standard windows button to shutdown. I think I know how to exit the Classic Start menu. (Right-click on the little window logo at the upper-left... and a menu comes up. I'll choose EXIT. )

But then what? I don't think I know how to find the standard Windows button to shut down. And what will happen on restart? Will I be back in Classic Shell? And what if I want to get back into the Classic Start menu right after exiting? How do I do that?

Thanx in advance for any help with all this.
I have a 6 month old computer with Classic Shell installed with Win 8.1... and

@Mr.Magoo , Do not exit Classic Shell before shutting down. Use the Start Menu to shut down. If it is giving you any issue, go to Classic Start Menu settings and uncheck "Enable hybrid shutdown" from the Main Menu tab.
