When I first started using classic the start button would do the following:
If I pointed at it and clicked the menu would open up.
If I pointed at it all the way at the extreme lower left, the button would shrink in size. When I clicked it it would go to the start screen.

Recently I had to reinstall everything over again and ever since then I lost the described functionality and have no idea how to get it back. i'd really appreciate some help!

You will get this behavior by disabling the suppression of the active corners. Go to the Windows 8 tab in the settings and set "Disable active corners" to None.
