Now that I have learned to make applications appear in the leftmost column of the Start Menu by pinning shortcuts to Classic Start Menu, I have two new questions:

1. How can I choose/control the shortcut for each pinned application (other than first letter or by inserting a made-up first letter)?

2. How can I eliminate submenus that have appeared for some applications, though I know not whence they came?

Thank you!

1. You can use & in the name. The next letter will be the shortcut key.
2. Uncheck the "Enable jumplists" setting in the Main Menu tab.

Thank you!

#1 works, but of course now the name looks funny. I seem to recall an older version of Classic Start Menu, in which these shortcuts could be set in an ini file. But when I look in my language (US English) section of the file, I don't see a way to do it there. So for now at least, I've just renamed the item as it appears in the start menu itself. Is there a "better" way?

#2 works perfectly!

So, sorry. That's how it's always been in all start menus since Windows 95. The first letter is used unless there is & somewhere in the name.
For non-file items you can add & inside the name and the next character will be underlined. That's what you remember from the ini file. But it only works for custom menu items, and not for file names.

Thank you. What might be a couple examples of custom menu items, just so I can get the distinction clearly in my mind?

The custom items are the ones you edit in the settings (the Customize Start Menu tab). The label is used only for display purposes and I can afford to treat the & character differently. The & is hidden, and the letter after it is underlined. If you want to use & in the name, type && instead.

On the other hand the file items come from a folder on disk. Since the & character is part of the file name, I can't simply omit it from the menu. Then files like "Rock & Roll" will not show up correctly.

Thank you, this is much more clear to me now. I tried to change the shortcut for Computer, in the ini file. But ... which entry is it (under US English). I see Control Panel, Printers, Run, Search, etc. but not Computer.

Why do I wish to change this shortcut? Because Control Panel is using "c". :)

Oh, I just figured it out. It's in Settings, not the ini file. I didn't realize that I could add a label. Now ... I do!
