I've been using classic shell pretty much since it came out, just to get the Cascading All Programs menu.

I know I'm two years late with this, but I'd really love it if that were the default setting so it would remind everyone of how much better that style works than the "inside main menu" style works.

What I find to look cleanest, is the "Windows 7 style" and then enabling Cascading Sub Menus. So all the search results are in the main menu, and everything works just as nice as could be.

Thank you.

I know, I felt the same way. Many people think they must use the 'Classic with two columns' style to get the cascading menu. They are not even aware that the Windows 7 style can also be turned into a cascading menu.

I myself use the same settings as you because I like search results being displayed from top to bottom, not from bottom to top as the 'Classic with two columns' style does. And I can't live without the Cascading All Programs menu either. The 'inside main menu' style treeview drove me nuts ever since Vista. That said, Classic Shell is being used by millions, many of them simply want the Windows 7 style to behave exactly as the original Windows 7 menu. They prefer the compactness of the treeview style (which I personally don't). Plus, changing the default now will mean some new version will have to override/change users' existing settings, something they won't be pleased with.

I do try to encourage people to use the cascading style via the Facebook page. At its heart, Classic Start Menu's core strength remains that it's the only decent cascading style menu.

I would just like to point out that I couldn't find this at first (when I typed cascading into classic shells search)
Maybe the settings search should include radio button text?

I prefer cascading myself.
that being said, the inline menu does look more visually appealing, even if it sacrifices some usability for it :P

I'm pretty bummed at the new Windows 9 videos that show cascading hasn't returned. : \

@Jcee, yes that is a known limitation of the Settings dialog as of version 4.1.0. Radio button option text, tooltip help text and skin options are not searched.

Windows 9's Start Menu screenshots make me think that Microsoft is just going to rearrange parts of the Start screen in the shape of a Start Menu. It does not even look visually pleasing to me, nor usable (no text labels for small tile size, large tiles are too large for mouse users and waste valuable screen space), nor very productive from the point of view of being able to quickly access important system locations. The search is no longer as fast and relevant as the Windows 7 menu search. There doesn't even seem to be text labels for the Shutdown button in the screenshots I am seeing!
