I love the classic start menu (and Explorer.) It's SOOO much better than the one in Windows 7. My only problem is that, while Explorer works great, when I click the start menu (main reason I have CS) it freezes Windows Explorer and gives it the famed Not Responding error. I've temporarily uninstalled it. Any help?

Use the program "procdump" to capture a dump as described here: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6
First try the crash command "procdump -e explorer.exe". If it fails to capture a crash dump then Explorer is not crashed but frozen. If so, try the other command "procdump -n 10 -s 1 explorer.exe".

You can also try the command "procdump -h explorer.exe", which will save a dump if the process hangs.

For some reason it is stuck trying to get an icon for some URL.

I would recommend you exit the menu, then go to the folder %APPDATA%\ClassicShell. Delete the DataCache.db file and try again. This will reset the start menu icon cache. You can try deleting the Windows icon cache as well: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49 ... build.html

Also examine your start menu for web shortcuts (URL files) that may be invalid.

That didn't work.

Well, you need to find which URL is causing the problem. The dump does not contain enough information to figure it out. I would start by removing all url files from the start menu and then adding them one by one.

I literally moved everything in the "Start Menu" folder to a temporary new folder and it still does the same thing.

First, there are two start menu folders - one for the user and one that is shared. Second, the start menu looks up other folders as well, like the desktop, the pinned folders, and even the favorites. Actually now that I think about it, Favorites is the likely source of a bad URL.

If you are interested, I can provide you with a debug build that will create better dumps. Contact me at classicshell@ibeltchev.com if you are game.
