I use the "Classic button." I'd like to be able to change its location to match my Win7 machine. On Win7 the start button butts up against the top of the task bar, but under Classic Shell on Win8.1, it's floating vertically in the middle. Can this be changed? Here's what I see:

Top image is Win7, bottom is 8.1.

You can make your own button image which looks like the Classic button. Use transparent pixels at the bottom of the image to fine-tune the position. The image must have 3 parts arranged vertically - normal, hot, and pressed. Then switch to "Custom" button option and load that image.

Edit: I made a button for you. Hopefully the position is correct (double height small icons taskbar), otherwise adjust to add or remove transparent pixels.

Thank you for this. I made the image a little wider to give it some padding, especially on the left. I run Win8.1 in a VM and this seems to help.
