Since upgrading Classic Shell from v3.8 to v4.0, my Novell ZENworks 11.2 icons/folders on the start menu no longer work. To be specific, the submenu items are displayed with unknown document icons. And subsequent submenus are showing as empty. Right or left click on those items does nothing.

v4.0

This is on Windows 7 Professional x64 w/SP1. This worked on v3.8 but not on v4.0.

Changing the start menu style had no effect. Changing the Skin had no effect. I even changed the Windows Theme from an Aero theme to Windows 7 Basic and Windows Classic with no effect.

Earlier, an empty items issue was reported with ZENworks 10 and Classic Shell 3.6.x too: http://sourceforge.net/p/classicshell/s ... /?limit=50 But for you it works fine with 3.6.x, only not with Classic Shell 4? Also, has your ZENworks version changed since or the same?

Also, it works when the Windows Classic theme is enabled as you say there? Do the icons show and menu isn't empty when using Windows Classic theme?

The empty items issue with ZENworks 11.2 (same version, hasn't changed) still exists in v3.6 and v3.8 when the Windows theme is not Windows Classic (Control Panel - Personalization). I did not bring it up because I thought it might be a bit off topic. In v4.0, the context menu doesn't open at all and the icons are unresponsive with left and right clicks, along with the generic file icons.

v3.8 with blank context menus for submenu items.
Note, you can see the highlighted item where my cursor was hovering. The items are selectable and work, you just can't read the text to know what you are selecting.

v3.8 and v4.0 the main folder context menu works. It is just subsequent submenus/icons.

v4.0 the Novell submenu/icons do not work at all regardless of Windows Theme. Cannot get a context menu at all on right-click on submenu/icons.

Suppose you open the folder where ZENworks shortcuts are stored, does Explorer show them properly? What is the extension of the shortcuts? Also, does the original Windows 7 Start menu show them?

Yes, explorer shows them properly.

It's some sort of shell folder, so I can't see file extensions. If I do a DIR of the Start Menu folder, I can see the shell extensions.

It shows on the Windows 7 start menu and works.

I don't know much about ZENworks. From what I found on the novell site it looks like an enterprise level software that costs thousands. I have no access to such software to do any testing.

If you are willing to do the testing we can try finding a solution, but it will take time and effort. It will not be something that will be solved for the next version.

I'm willing to do the testing.

OK, we'll do this in a week or two after the dust settles from the release of 8.1. At the moment there are more pressing issues that affect more people.

I installed Windows Server and Novell ZENworks and was able to reproduce the issue. The problem is that the ZENworks shell extension implements only the bare minimum of the functionality to be able to work inside Explorer, and doesn't follow all the rules for a well-behaved extension.

I posted on their forums yesterday and hopefully one of their engineers will reply: http://forums.novell.com/novell-product ... 99424.html

If they don't respond by mid-next week I will try to develop a workaround. I'm not sure if that's possible though.

I had to search for the posting. Apparently, they removed a plugin due to a security vulnerability, so previous URLs are now invalid. Here is the latest URL.
