For some reason, the search box that appears after clicking the start button doesn't work. it just gives me the "Windows cannot find [xxxxxx]. Please make sure it is typed correctly and try again." Any advice would be appreciated.

the search box currently only searches files within the start menu, and the system folder, if your trying to use it to find music or photos, ect. it probably wont find them.

I get the same error. The xxxxx would be whatever search term was entered - perhaps a few words from an e-mail message or any other document.

The search box for the old menu cant search internals of a file, and only searches within the files stored somewhere in your start menu (or in the system folder)
However as of the Beta candidate that is currently being handed out, it can use windows built in search, and index, and should thus be in every way as powerful as windows search..

Well good news for you. Now the latest public beta version of Classic Shell which is available from the home page has full Windows Search integration, including file search. Try it if you are interested.
