Post subject:  Background Search for Classic Start Menu

Hi!

Hope you're all well.

Apologies if this has been posted already, but I haven't found anything and it's also a bit tricky to search for something like this too.

Use Case: I click on the start menu, type something to search for it (e.g. an app name) but it sometimes takes quite a bit of time, especially on older PCs (my processor is ~4 years old). In these cases, I instinctively and intuitively click elsewhere to focus on a task I'm doing already, but then realise that clicking outside cancels the search and the start menu closes.

Thus I was wondering if there could be a feature that either:

1) keeps the start menu open during a search and there is a click on something else, which would normally close the start menu, or
2) closes the start menu but keeps the search ongoing (which is probably not the best because you may want to stop a very intensive search after you realise a faster way to get to that app or what you're searching for

So I suppose a realistic way to implement it is checking if = is searching; then start menu = is active. And while this is happening, cancelling it could be done by a quick double-click (or double-right click?) instead of a single-click or any subsequent clicks that are not successively fast enough.

What do you guys think?

After Windows Vista, search was changed by Microsoft so only indexed results show up quickly. The non-indexed search of Windows is extremely slow and inefficient. So the Start Menu only returns indexed search results for files and PC Settings. For app shortcuts and Control Panel, Classic Start Menu does its own quick search.

You can use a third party free app like FileLocator Lite to do background searches inside files and to perform quick filename-based searches. I also recommend Voidtools Everything which can do instant filename-based searches as long as you don't need to search inside files.

There is no background/in-depth search feature planned for Classic Start Menu. You can use Explorer for those kinds of searches or the third party apps mentioned above.
