Ever since the most recent update to Windows 10, I've seen a lot of people complaining about how the start menu was changed to always have the All Apps menu expanded, and asking if there's a way to get the old style back. If they're not using tiles, I recommend Classic Shell to them.

Classic Shell isn't quite the same as what they had before that, though. The single-column style seems to be able to emulate everything on the Windows 10 start menu fine, but there's an issue in that the All Programs menu is automatically cascading, while the old version of the Windows 10 menu opened the list of programs in place, just like the Windows 7 menu does.

I'm wondering if it would make sense to port the in-place menu into the Single-column style, in order to better hit a potential new audience. There's still the difference of the alphabet labels and single-depth folders, but there's a good chance that many people would love to get rid of those anyway.

The in-place programs list imposes certain requirements to the main menu, like for example the All Programs button has to be at the bottom. The Classic style lets you rearrange the items in any way you like, so that's not guaranteed.

Just a thought...what if the "All Programs" button disappeared when clicked if it wasn't at the bottom, and the "back" button was always displayed at the bottom regardless of the "All Programs" button's position?

I know it's not an optimal solution, but it's better than nothing...right...? Maybe?

You can use the Windows 7 menu style, set everything on "Customize Start Menu" tab to "Don't display this item". Then set "Shutdown command" to None (hide the button). This turns off the 2nd (right side) column in the Windows 7 style of the menu, giving you a single column menu with in-place non-cascading All Programs.

That completely cuts out the various user directory and system shortcuts, unfortunately.

You asked to make it like the (old version of the) Windows 10 menu which does not have directory shortcuts either. :P If you want directory shortcuts, you can just right click the directory and choose "Pin to Start Menu (Classic Shell)".
