All versions of IE prior to IE9 had a separate search box. Automatic searching via the address bar is a major security risk. If you mistype an intranet URL the string goes to your default search provider potentially exposing sensitive information.

You cannot turn off just automatic searching from the address bar in IE9/10. You can turn searching off completely which means you cannot type a string and press Ctrl-e to search.

The request is for the classic search box that is missing from IE9/10.
