By default in Windows 7, and I believe earlier versions, when dragging a file or folder onto the navigation (left) pane in Explorer, a destination under the mouse will auto-expand to show sub-folders after a brief fixed delay. This fixed delay is too damned short, and has continuously over the years triggered JUST as I was releasing the mouse, resulting in the target being delivered to an undesired location rather than the intended destination! Just now I had to perform a full system search of many terabytes to find where it had actually placed a folder I had been attempting to drag and drop Can this delay be made configurable? 27 Also, in Windows 7 and likely earlier versions, Explorer's navigation pane will "helpfully" scroll up or down if a drag-and-drop operation pauses too long over a destination too close to the top or bottom of the pane (I believe within two items). Frequently this results in an item being dropped in the wrong place because the list shifts under the mouse JUST as it is being released. Can this auto-scrolling behavior be disabled or the delay be made configurable? 30 |

I think one is supposed to drop the folder after it is done expanding since there is no time restriction on how long you can hold down the left click. At any time you can press Esc or the right click button to cancel the drag operation. Or you can right click and drag so it gives you an additional confirmation by displaying a context menu. If it operated in the reverse way (greater time period to expand the folder), then to get to a folder several hierarchies deep, it would take a lot of time. |

No you're not, you're supposed to be bold and confident and release the mouse on the destination before it even begins to expand. I'm a pedantic timid careful chicken, though, and I often hesitate too long making sure I'm positioned over the intended destination. The result is that I frequently wind up releasing over a sub-folder of the intended destination rather than the intended destination. I want to be able to lengthen the delay to accommodate my timidity. 110 |

Try drag and drop with the right click? Then you can see if the folder has expanded and you can avert any issues if the folder just happens to expand as you release the click. |

Sure, I do that... SOMETIMES. Other times I do not, and that is when this one-size-fits-all Explorer feature kicks me in the ass. Always right-clicking, and having to deal with the resultant dialog, when doing repetitive operations is not ideal. Also, quietly condensing, editing, and deleting user posts without permission or at least notification is rather rude and presumptuous. I freaked out momentarily when I noticed that one of my three recent posts had disappeared. I discovered what you had done the hard way, by opening the other two and seeing the missing post's content appear in one of them. 137 |

Oh sorry I didn't mean to freak you out. ![]() |
