This is the third PC I have encountered that has at least two versions of classic shell installed, with no way to know what the prior version was. I can uninstall the new version but remnants of the old versions are still there with no way to uninstall them. |

I don't see how you can have 2 versions of Classic Shell installed together. Maybe it is some other software with a similar name? What kind of remnants are you seeing? |

Classic Shell can be uninstalled in the same way you remove any other desktop app. Go to Control Panel -> Programs and Features and uninstall it from there. Another way to uninstall is to download the installer of the exact version that you have installed, and run it. It will give you the option to uninstall as well. |
