At the moment, the dropdown "standard commands" for start menu items includes entries for "shutdown" and "restart".

The trouble is that Windows automatically changes these to "Update and shutdown" and "Update and restart" (and doesn't show the simple "shutdown" and "restart" options) if Windows Updates are available. Some users may want the wording and action to change, but others may not want this behaviour. Fixing this isn't hard if one knows a little (I use the item entry "shutdown -p -t 0" and "shutdown -r -t 0" or for forced shutdown, add "/f") but this isn't obviously possible unless one happens to know a shutdown command exists. So it might be easier and more intuitive if the list were explicit and clearly allowed a choice whether shutdown items should change wordings should change or not, if updates exist.

It's hard to word new dropdown entries concisely, without being confusing (I tried).

So could the dialog instead have a checkbox added for "Don't change to 'update and...' " or "Change to "Update and..." if updates exist" (or something), which allows the user to choose behaviour and item wording, if Windows Updates exist?

Uncheck the setting "Check for Windows updates on shutdown" in the General Behavior tab.

Doesn't really help - a user may want to enjoy flexibility and show both options.

For example normally shutdown-and-update, but if in a hurry, shutdown-without-updating.

If a user has gone as far as to customise the menu contents, it might help to give that as an option for completeness as well.

Well, that's what you were asking for, right? A checkbox to "don't change to update".

The current behavior mimics the existing start menu in Windows. As you noticed, people who care about the extra power already know how to do this.

Btw you can always press Alt+F4 on the Windows Desktop and use the Shutdown/Restart options from there to avoid installing updates before shutdown/restart.

Or, try holding down Shift as you click "Update and Restart" in the Start Menu. ;)

I don't recommend changing the text or commands (if you use the Classic style of the menu) because it's actually a reminder that updates are going to happen before you shutdown or restart. So if you're like in a hurry to shutdown or restart thinking that it'll be quick but instead, suddenly updates start installing and wasting your time, the text in the Start Menu actually serves as a warning that you may want to hold off on the restart/shutdown altogether until your work on the PC is done. :)
