Post subject:  Be able run Classic Shell as app pinned to task bar in 8.1.
Ultra books and Convertibles have a hardware start button as well to switch between Metro and Desktop. If Classic Shell is installed, it pops up the Classic Start menu, and you cannot cycle back to Metro. If Classic Shell could be pinned to the task bar to the right of the stock start button in Windows 8.1, people could have the full functionality of both.

Create a shortcut with the following command line:
"C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\ClassicStartMenu.exe" -toggle
Pin this shortcut to the Taskbar and position it next to the Start button.

I will give that a try. I had another thought too.

Currently, you can get the button to work the Windows 8.1 way with <ctrl>click. What would be very useful would be to be able to reverse that so that you can bring up the Classic Shell menu with <ctrl>click instead. The advantage of that is when you are using it as a tablet, and you have no keyboard, it works the way you need it to work, without having to remember to untoggle it. When you are using it as a laptop, the keyboard is available to do the <ctrl>click. Mr. Beta is here, ready to try it out for you. :D

Open Classic Start Menu settings and make sure "Show all settings" is checked. Go to the Controls tab. There you can assign what Left click opens and what Shift+Left click opens (Ctrl isn't supported, only Shift). You can set either of them to open Classic Start Menu or Windows Start Screen.

If you have both a hardware Win button (which is equivalent to the Win key) as well as touch screen (which is equivalent to a mouse click) I recommend you assign different actions to each. Then you can access both menu styles at all time.

And dont forget that there is a Start option in the charms menu (on a touch screen you drag from the right edge of the screen towards the center)

I actually just got a touch screen mounted on a hinge above my bed, and I've found this to be the best way, without sacrificing functionality when i'm at my desk..
