I recently did a comparison of 5 free and 5 paid start menu replacements. Classic Shell was clearly the best. In fact the paid ones were mostly the worst.

Since I had been using 8.1 for awhile before this evaluation, one of the features I came to use regularly was the extensiveness of the right click menu on the start button. Unfortunately all the start button replacements (including CS) replaced both the left click actions and the right click menu. Yeah, the programs that added a second start button instead of replacing the Windows 8.1 Start don't have this problem but they don't really count. And yeah, all the things in the menu can probably be found elsewhere but I think at least that was one thing Microsoft did right putting them in the start button menu.

So is there any was to update Classic Shell with an option to replace the left click actions as done now, but not replace the right click menu in Windows 8.1? Or better yet, instead of replacing the menu, add the CS menu options as a context menu, similar to the many programs enhance the right click inside explorer.

This is already there, you just didn't look hard enough ;) :P

In the Start Menu settings dialog, type: 'right click' (without the quotes) into the Search box and check the option Right click opens Win+X menu. This setting is on the Controls tab (in case you can't find it by searching). Then click OK. Thereafter you will be able to access the regular Win+X menu by right click and the Classic Shell context menu by Shift+right click.

Thanks GauravK. I had just found that when installing v4.0.6 and playing with options some more. With this, Classic Shell is 99.9% perfection for me. One other thing I can't find is how to set the icons smaller on the left pane of the menu. I tend to pin a dozen items and with the larger icon size it makes the menu too tall for my taste. I am sure there is a way, just not intuitive.

With the update from Microsoft this month, which is supposed to finally add a real start menu, I am quite anxious to see how their implementation compares with CS and how CS will evolve afterwards.

I am also liking CS so much now I am thinking of moving it to all the Windows 7 machines I use and export/import settings so every machine looks the same.

To make the icon size smaller in the left column, go to the Menu Look tab. Change the Large Icon size setting's value to 16 or 24 (whatever suits you). Then click OK to save settings and right click the Start button -> Exit. Start it again from C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\ClassicStartMenu.exe.

Right click on start = Win+x (+ Classic Shell properties option)

That should be default option ;)
Great piece of code!

You can edit the Win+X menu yourself using Win+X Menu Editor: http://winaero.com/comment.php?comment.news.30 . Add a shortcut to open Classic Shell's settings if you want. The command line to use is:
"C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\ClassicStartMenu.exe" -settings
