Hey,

I'm a corporate IT administrator and been working with the classic shell to deploy it across our business to customize the start menu on Windows 10 computers. So far I've managed to get what I wanted but I found one little bug that I cannot seem to fix.

What I want is the following:

- Have a completely empty start menu beside the log off button/side show arrow.

I can completely strip off the start menu (from Windows 7 template) and have the 2 standard column but as soon as I use the GPO to hide the "All programs" option, the menu shrink to a 1 side menu and I'm losing the 2nd side which contains the log off option.

See attached file for screenshot...

Regards,

The Windows 7 style requires to have something in each of the two columns.
What exactly do you want to see in the menu?

As stated... nothing but the possibility to log off. The only way I have to do it at the moment is to use ctrl+alt+del or to leave "all programs" but it gives the users the ability to use programs they should not have access to.

Also, I do not need to have anything in the right menu for it to work properly. As soon as I hide the all programs (which is the last thing in the menu), it's bugging out.

If all you want is the shutdown button, just use the Classic style with one column. Delete all items except the ones you want to keep.

Bah... I wanted the style of the Windows 7 menu rather than the XP menu. It's really just the way it resize the menu that makes it buggy. It could leave the menu size the way it is even if it's empty of items in it and i'd have that nice "close session" with the other shut down options...

I don't understand why you want to have a big menu that's just blank. It serves no purpose.
The Classic skins are very close to the corresponding Windows 7 skins - for example in both cases the Windows 8 skin looks almost identical. The only difference is that in the classic skin the user picture is completely inside the menu instead of partially outside.

Well... The menus are not the same... It might only be a matter of personal taste but having the choice would be nice. If it comes to having a menu that is shrunk to the point where you see almost nothing of the empty space but still have that Windows 7 logoff and shutdown options, that would be even better. I know it's possible to design such a menu in Windows 7 and on Windows 2008R2 terminal servers. It's been all screwed up with the new tiles menu =(

Starting from that menu you have in the screenshot, remove all pinned items, disable the recent/frequent list, disable the search box, and remove the caption on the side from the skin settings.
You'll end up with just the logoff and shutdown buttons. Isn't that exactly what you want?

I recommend the classic style too for such level of customization/flexibility. An empty Start menu with all functions disabled but still taking up space doesn't make sense, isn't useful. Just my opinion.

I just wanted to have the look of the modern UI. I didn't want the 2 big Windows XP buttons but the more refined "Log off" button with the arrow next to it to show the other options.

I understand that the classic UI does not have the Windows 7 UI bug shown but even if there's a possible workaround, the fact remains that hiding all the options from the Windows 7 UI generates an unwanted result.

You can construct a menu item with the extra arrow. Add any sub-menu items to be child items of the main Shutdown item.
Then check the setting "Split button item" in the main item's properties.
This will create a button that you can click, with an additional arrow that opens sub-menu with the other options.
