Agreed, this is a Win10 problem. I just assumed that having uninstalled Classic Shell that some essential file(s) had been deleted from the system.
I found a copy of boot.wim on another site and downloaded and added the file to the Win10 directory, but this fix just did not work for me. After making a few more tweaks the Win10 upgrade suddenly started to download from the start again - so after an hour or so I was able to start the upgrade process again.
I still don't know how the upgrade suddenly started up again, but it seemed to confirm that my original problem had nothing to do with Classic Shell.
