Post subject:  Settings popping out at every reboot or logon

Hello,
To start with, I want to thank you for your application which has made the enforced use of Windows 8 bearable.
Nevertheless, I have a slight, but annoying problem with it.
I use your version 4.1.0 on my Packard bell EasyNote TE69KB notebook running on an OEM Windows 8.1 Update 1 OS.
On it I have two user accounts : my normal user account with administrative rights and my Administrator user account with full fledged administrative rights. Both accounts have different avatars picture, different names (my first name and Administrator) and different passwords.
Everytime I make new settings from one account or the other, then at every reboot, log on or change of user account I have my latest settings popping up, before I do anything else (on both my user accounts).
Everytime I click OK, for fear of losig those settings, which is becoming rather tedious.
I have tried clicking on SAVE to no avail.
I have tried to reboot, but it didn't solve the problem.
On my Administrator account, I once tried right clicking and Exit, which temporarily solved the problem on previous settings. It temporarily uninstalled your program, but I was easily able to reinstall it from my Programs folder, without any loss of settings.
Yesterday, after new settings (disable all corners) made from my Administrator account reinstated the poppin out problem on both acccount, I tried the same procedure (exit) from my normal account and lost your application and couldn't reinstall it from either account (perhaps because your program was still installed on my Administrator account.
In a panic, I restored the system and to my relief, recovered your application on both my user accounts.
But my poppin up problem remains.
I have read avery 18 pages of the bug reports on this forum, but found nothing that seemed to relate to my problem.
Please could you advise me on a way to fix it?
Thanks a lot for everything you might do to help me. :D

I don't fully understand what is going on.
Are you saying that every time you log in the start menu settings pop up?

Hello,
Thanks for answering so quickly.
In answer to your question, I'm afraid I am.
Iam attaching a screenshot of my Administrator account after a reboot to show you.
To be more precise, first an hourglass pops up and a few seconds later, the settings menu shows up, just like on the screenshop.
The same happens on my normal account, and if you need it, I could attach another screenshot, taken that time on my normal account.
It doesn't happen instantaneouly, but quickly enough if I don't notice the hourglass or don't wait for the settings menu to pop up (as from experience I know it will) for the settings menu to overlay anything else I might have opened within that short delay.
I hope the screenshot may enlighten you, because you will understand it is disturbing.
I would appreciate an explanation (I may very well have misunderstood or unwittingly misused your application in some way) and a solution.
If you can't find any, I'll resign myself to simply keep on waiting for the settings menu to pop up, then click on OK to close it, thus keeping my settings.
Because, otherwise, your application has worked perfectly for me, that really is the only problem with it.
Hoping my answer will be useful to you, thank you for reading my post and trying to understand my problem.
Marina

Download the Classic Shell Utility from here: http://www.classicshell.net/downloads/
Run it and send me the log file.

Hello Ivo,
Once again thanks for your prompt answer.
I did what you suggested, clicked on the link in your message.
After uninstalling my previous version of your application and rebooting from the Modern UI , I was then able to run your file and was very relieved to see the start button immediately reappear in my taskbar.
And I was pleased to find my settings unaffected (especially the disble all corners one).
I then wondered which log you were referring to in your message and then remembered that by clicking on the arrow on the SAVE button of the settings menu, one could save an xml file, which I did and attached to this post.
Perhaps I shouldn't have, but I rebooted to see if the problem had been solved on the account I had been doing that from (the Administrator account).
Once more the setting menu popped up.
I then logged in to my normal account and found that there too, the start button had reappeared in the taskbar and the settings were unchanged.
I renewed the experience of rebooting from my normal account and got the same result.
In case you need it, I made screenshots of those pop ups that I will send you if you request them.
On the other hand, the settings menu no longer pops up when changing accounts.
Because the problem first occured after I customized my start button, I was suspecting it might have caused the problem.
But, I checked on my Google's history file and found that I had actually downloaded from this forum (author GauravK), so it must be a mere coincidence.
I hope the attached log will enable you to find out what may be the cause of that problem and that my reboots didn't mess up anything.
And I really appreciate your willingess to help me.

Marina

That's not the right file. Run the Classic Shell Utility, and let it save a log file Remember where you tell it to save. Attach that file here.

The Classic Shell Utility can be downloaded from this page: http://www.classicshell.net/downloads/

You could also try opening Windows Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Switch to the Startup tab of Task Manager and locate the entry which opens the Classic Start Menu Settings and disable it.

Hello,
I am not sure I understand what you mean, but on reviewing my post I noticed my attachment appeared as not downloaded yet.
When I clicked on the attachment link, nothing showed up.
As I see no other way of having the Classing Shell Utility (I suppose you are referring to the Classic Start Menu) and let it save a log file than again saving that same file into a more accessible folder.
I have set my Explorer display settings so that I get a preview of a given file when I click on it and when I did so on that file before attaching it to my post, I had an inkling of its contents.
Though a good part of it is meaningless to me, it looks to me like the sort of data, which might be useful to you.
If that still isn't the right file, I'm afraid you will have to give me detailed instructions.
Please remember that unlike you I am not an expert by a long chalk, despite my interest in computers.
I hope this time my attachment will show up properly.
Many thanks for trying to help me.

Thank you very much for your answer to my post.
On Ivo's request I already did that and tried as he asked to run it and send him the log file.
It promptly reinstalled the applications, with my settings unchanged to my delight (especially the "disable all active corners" and your w7 style buttons).
But it didn't solve the pop up problem except when goig from one of my user accounts to the other.
I sent him what I believed to be the log file he needed, but he told me I hadn't sent him the right one. Was it because my attachment's download seemed to have failed? Because I am not sure I understood his instructions, I tried once more to download that attachment (menu settings.hml) from another folder on my computer. I told him if that wasn't what he wanted, he would have to give me more detailed instructions.
I will now try your advice about the Task Manager and then get back to you to report.
Even if doesn't succeed, I'll have learnt a new combination of hotkeys (I open the Task Manager by right-clicking an empty space on my Taskbar, which then enables me to click on Task Manager, which opens it.)
Anyhow thanks a lot for your willingness to help and your nice W7 style buttons, which enabled me to customize my Classic Shell Start Button.

You are attaching the settings file (an XML file). I am asking for the log file from the Classic Shell Utility that you have to download from here: http://classicshell.net/downloads/ (4th section on that page)
It is a completely separate program that you have to download separately.
When you download it, run it, and it will ask where to save a log file. Save it to the desktop.
Find that file (it should be a TXT file) then attach it here.
