FYI,
I seem to have run into a bug with Classic Shell installer with v4.1.0.

The installer starts, then gets locked in some process when creating shortcuts. It just sits there until the program eventually times out or crashes.
I never saw this problem before in previous version; however, I can't seem to find a link to download the previous versions to check this out. Is there a good link to download previous iterations of this installer on the 4.x branch? Never mind on this later request, I just found it... I was blind earlier. Testing out older versions now.

Thanks!
Robin aka Wakko

A quick update.
I've tried all versions from 4.0.1 to 4.1.0; all failing at "creating shortcuts". Gonna try the 3.x branch in a sec. FYI, this is on ESXi 5.1.0 and 5.5.0 with latest VMware tools installed on the VM. This was not an issue in the past.

Local administrator account being used to install with; Windows 8.0 Enterprise

I suspect it may have something to do with the Windows 8-specific properties set by the installer on the shortcuts when they are created.

You can try running the installer with logging enabled like this:
ClassicShellSetup.exe /l* log.txt

The log will be created in the same folder as the installer. Attach the log file here so at which step it fails can be determined.

ESXi is VMWare's vSphere Hypervisor for hosting virtual machines. You can obtain it free at http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere-hypervisor and it will run completely unrestricted for 60 days without a license. However after 60 days, you must license (freely or paid) or reinstall the hypervisor. For this server, its running the free license and unmanaged from vCenter.

ESXi 5.5.0 is the second to latest version and the latest version that Dell has updated to for their specific drivers on hosts (servers)
_______

Looks like using the "/l* log.txt" command against the file on command-line made the installer work, not sure why though. Was the first time it installed without a hiccup though. Does this forum have a place to host the file or do I need to setup something that can be referenced? Will upload the file and screenshots shortly. Doing a test on the VM updating from Windows 8.0 to 8.1

Thank you for your support and time!

The log would've helped figure out what was wrong if the installation had failed. Anyway, you can attach images and text files to this forum.

Here's what I have to show and upload. I hope this helps in isolating what this issue might have been. The VM is a vanilla installation of Windows 8.0 Enterprise with latest patches prior to updating to Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

Doing some internal testing to see what might get messed up from the user's perspective when updating from 8.0 to 8.1; was also personally wondering what happens to classic shell menu with the re-integrated OS start menu that MS threw haphazardly into 8.1.

Thanks,
Robin
