I have windows 8 with Classic Shell, and I have it set up to give me a windows 7-style start menu. I have Word 2013 pinned to my start menu, and have it set up to show recent documents when i hover over the Word 2013 icon. Recently, the pin function has stopped working. I can't unpin anything currently pinned, and I can't pin anything new to that recent documents list. Any idea how to fix this?

Try pinning Word to the taskbar and see if the recent docs list works from there.

yes, it works from there, and updates over to the start menu, but it still doesn't work from the start menu

Try the latest version 4.3.0. It has improved jumplist support. Basically it uses the same code as the taskbar.
